What ends up on Lowyat about people

Lowyat.NET started as a technology forum and became one of Malaysia’s largest general discussion boards, with an English-language rule and a Kopitiam section for everything else. Its threads are indexed by Google and can rank for names, company names and phone numbers.

The posts that bring people to us are rarely about gadgets:

• Buy-and-sell disputes: a buyer or seller labelled a scammer, with a phone number, bank account or photo
• Workplace threads: former staff naming a manager or describing a colleague
• Kopitiam gossip: relationship stories, family disputes, screenshots of private chats
• Call-outs copied from TikTok or Facebook, where a viral post gets its own discussion thread

Lowyat’s own rules work in your favour

The forum is run by Lowyat MSC Sdn Bhd in Kuala Lumpur. Its terms of use prohibit content that is threatening, abusive or harassing, knowingly posting false or misleading information, and collecting or disclosing other users’ personal information without their consent. They also reserve the operator’s right to edit or remove any content at any time.

Those terms are the basis of our requests. A post that publishes your phone number, IC number or address, or that turns a dispute into harassment, breaks them, whatever the truth of the underlying story.

The route, step by step

1. Evidence. We capture the thread, every reply quoting it, the dates and the Google result, before anything is changed.
2. Report to the moderators of the section concerned, through the forum’s reporting function, citing the specific rule each post breaks.
3. Escalation to the operator through the support contact published in Lowyat’s terms when moderators do not act or when the problem is the whole thread.
4. Quotes and copies. Each reply that quotes the post repeats its text, so we list them all; scraper sites that copy Lowyat threads are handled with their owners or hosts.
5. Google. Once the thread is edited or removed, we ask Google to refresh the result through its outdated content tool, and file personal-information requests where a result still shows your details.

Where the law fits

Lowyat is not one of the large licensed platforms under the Online Safety Act 2025, so its 12-hour clock does not apply. Section 24 of the Act still allows any user to report harmful content to MCMC, including on sites like this one, and we can file that report for you when the content qualifies.

Under section 114A of the Evidence Act 1950, the owner or administrator of a site is presumed to be the publisher of its content, so a Malaysian operator has its own interest in acting on a clear complaint. If the thread publishes your identity information to cause distress, that may be doxxing under section 507E of the Penal Code: the police report is made by you in person at a police station, and we prepare the evidence pack for it. What we do not do

We never post in the thread, never create accounts to argue, never contact the author and never ask for your forum password.
