Dating apps and naked-chat blackmail in Hong Kong

Tinder is the most popular dating app in Hong Kong (Rakuten Insight, October 2024) and accounts for about half of online conversation about dating apps, ahead of Bumble and Coffee Meets Bagel (CARMA, 2025). Most matches are harmless. A minority are built to extract money.

The pattern Hong Kong Police call naked chat (裸聊) blackmail often starts on a dating app: an attractive profile, a quick move to another messaging app, an intimate video call that is secretly recorded, then a demand for money with a threat to send the recording to the victim’s friends, colleagues or family. Police recorded 1,312 naked-chat blackmail cases in 2025, and students made up 27.4% of victims. In a single month in 2026, 156 reports involved more than HK$3.4 million, with victims as young as 14 (The Standard, March 2026).

First steps if you are being threatened

  1. Do not pay and stop replying. Payment rarely ends the demands.
  2. Keep evidence: screenshots of the profile, the chat, the payment request and the account names, with dates.
  3. Call the Anti-Scam Helpline 18222 (24 hours) for advice, and report to the police at a station or through the e-Report Centre. Threatening to publish an intimate image is itself an offence under section 159AAE of the Crimes Ordinance.
  4. Report the profile in the app and contact us to watch for any upload.

Tinder’s reporting tools

On Tinder you can report someone before a match from the three dots on their profile, or after a match from the chat screen, using the three dots or the shield icon. If the person unmatched you, the conversation disappears, but Tinder accepts reports through the contact form in its help centre (help.tinder.com), which can also be used without a Tinder account. A useful report gives the name, age and bio shown, screenshots of the profile, and any other contact details or social links the person used.

Fake profiles built from your photos

Your photos may also be the bait. Pictures taken from your Instagram are used on a dating profile to run a romance scam, and victims may contact you believing you cheated them. We report the profile to Tinder as impersonation, with your original posts and their dates as proof, and check other dating apps and social networks for the same photos. See fake account removal for profiles on several sites at once.

What NetClearer does

  • Free written assessment of the situation, with a fixed quotation before you pay.
  • Reports to Tinder and to the other apps the account moved to, without logging into your accounts.
  • Leak watch and removal: if a recording is posted on an adult site, a Telegram channel or social media, each copy is reported to its host and Google is asked to de-index it. The 20-link package at HK$3,074 includes monitoring for re-uploads.
  • Evidence pack for your police report: a timeline of accounts, messages and links.

Your privacy

We never contact the blackmailer, your matches, your employer or your family. Never send us the images: links are enough. If a minor is involved, call 999 or go to a police station first.

Frequently asked questions

I already paid once. Is it too late to act?

No. Stop paying, keep the payment records and call 18222 or report to the police, because the receiving account may be traced. Many victims who paid were asked for more. We can start watching for uploads right away so any copy is reported quickly.

Can you remove the recording before it is posted?

Nobody can delete a file on the blackmailer’s phone. What we can do is monitor the places such recordings are usually posted and report each copy as soon as it appears, while the police deal with the threat itself. StopNCII can also block uploads on partner platforms.

I do not use Tinder. Can a fake profile with my photos be removed?

Yes. Tinder’s help-centre form accepts reports from people without an account. We send the profile screenshots with proof that the photos are yours, and we look for the same photos on other dating apps and social networks.

Will anyone know I asked for help?

No one is told by us. Tinder does not reveal who reported a profile, and we never contact the other person. If you report to the police, they handle the investigation confidentially; the evidence pack we prepare stays between you and them.

Tell us what’s happening. We’ll take it from here.

Free, confidential assessment in writing. Send the links through the form: we reply within 24 hours with the route, the timeline and the fixed HK$ price.
